It’s Time to Talk is a group intervention for children in the early years who are struggling with early interaction, single word vocabulary, attention and listening. It is designed to be run by early years professionals and covers these skills through a topic based approach.
Who is the intervention suitable for?
The children who are likely to benefit most from this intervention are those in early years who have delayed language skills as a result of limited early stimulation.
Appropriate early intervention will help to narrow the gap between those with delayed language skills and their peers. These children may present with difficulties in some of the following areas:

following an adult’s lead

More Time to talk is a targeted language group intervention, designed to be delivered by trained early years practitioners. The programme targets attention and listening skills, vocabulary development, understanding of two key words, saying two word phrases and teaching of early language concepts.
Who is the intervention suitable for?
The children who are likely to benefit most from this intervention are those who are delayed with their language as a result of reduced early stimulation. These children have the potential to narrow the language gap with their peers with appropriate early intervention.
These children may present with difficulties in some of the following areas:

understanding harder vocabulary including verbs

understanding two key word instructions or sentences

understanding concepts e.g. ‘big/little’ ‘on/under’ ‘no/not’

naming harder vocabulary including verbs

saying two or more words together in phrases or simple sentences

using describing words e.g. ‘big car’ ‘no juice’

The intervention pack includes session plans for three group sessions per week for six weeks, picture resources and pre/post intervention rating scales. The rating scales can be used to decide which children will benefit most from intervention and to measure progress.

The Early Communication Screen is a quick, easy to administer screening tool designed to be delivered by practitioners in the Early Years workforce. It can be used with children between the ages of 2 years and 5 years 11 months to identify delay in understanding and spoken language skills. Results enable practitioners to plan appropriate interventions and measure progress.

Developed by Speech and Language Therapists from Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire, the Early Communication Screen links to the EYFS framework, ‘Development Matters’ and Stoke Speaks Out tools.
It was piloted in 2015 across four schools and three private day nurseries and the results validated by assessing a sample of the children using a detailed standardised language assessment.
Since then it has been used by over 500 Early Years settings and schools across Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent and Shropshire.
